Support the Safe Schools Improvement Act (U.S.A.)

I just learned through a Facebook page that one year ago today Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover, a boy of only eleven years of age, committed suicide because he could no longer endure the bullying by other children in his school.

Please take a minute now to read the letter below, by his mother, and reflect on his tragically short life and what must be done to educate all children in the ways of peace.

For those who are U.S. citizens, in just one minute more, you can sign a petition here.  In just five minutes, you can call your representatives in Congress and ask them to support the Safe Schools Improvement Act (H.R. 2262), or thank them if they already do.  For more information, including the name and phone number of your representative, click here.  The support of their constituents is vital to a politician’s ability to support any bill.

A Letter From Carl’s Mother
Dear Members of the 111th Congress,

Meet my son, Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover.

On April 6, 2009, Carl chose to end his own life rather than endure more of the daily harassment and bullying he suffered at school. He was just 11 days shy of his 12th birthday.

I am writing you today because my son’s story must not be forgotten. I want you and other Members of Congress to look at Carl’s photograph and ask, “How could such a beautiful, precious life be lost so needlessly,” and “What can Congress do to prevent more such tragedies from happening in the future?”

The answer to the second question is to pass the Safe Schools Improvement Act (H.R. 2262). I urge you to reflect on the importance of this bill, and to take a leadership stand in Congress as an advocate for safe schools for all students.

This issue of school safety is vital to all young students. The consequences of bullying are very real, and in cases like my son’s, they are often life threatening. By supporting the Safe Schools Improvement Act, you will give a voice to students like Carl who face harassment and suffer needlessly at the hands of bullies. You will also support a brighter, safer and more productive school environment for our future generations.

  1. Thanks for sharing the letter. Situations like this are unbelievably tragic. I participated in a media summit with GLSEN and met Carl Joseph Walker-Hoover’s sister who is an activist. And the lede to the blog post about SSIA that I just wrote was sadly inspired by him:

    • Thank you for your comment, and for your 2 great posts in support of SSIA. I too find it thoroughly mind-boggling when people argue against equality or protection of gay rights by saying, “but if you do that then they’ll have to teach kindergarteners about homosexuality”. Um, ????????? That’s not just a leap of logic, it’s a falling-off-a-cliff of logic.
